The second day of VMware Explore 2023 kicked off with an energizing breakfast alongside my fellow Dallas/Fort Worth VMUG Leaders before heading to the main stage. As you might know, one of the highlights of attending VMware Explore is the sense of community and the chance to connect with fellow peers. These individuals are truly remarkable—a passionate group who share a deep appreciation for VMware and all things tech.
Today, was all about the main stage, where an exciting general session took place to a packed house. Attendees got to hear from key players who are shaping the future of enterprise tech innovation. Raghu Raghuram, the CEO of VMware, Sumit Dhawan, the President, Amanda Blevins, the VP and CTO AMER, along with other speakers, dived into how VMware and its partners are helping companies build, train, and run AI models.
Raghu Raghuram began by stepping onto the stage and discussing the profound impact that VMware has had on the industry throughout the last 25 years, culminating in the recent acquisition with Broadcom. According to Raghu, this event stands out as one of the most notable milestones. The question arises: What implications does this hold for VMware and its future?
Hock Tan, President & CEO of Broadcom, addressed this transformation. He initiated his discussion by highlighting how the merging of these two industry giants will foster healthy competition. This alignment will further propel the vision of enabling workloads to function seamlessly across any cloud, a concept championed by VMware. Tan noted that upon the completion of this acquisition, Broadcom will dedicate itself to enhancing VMware's products and services. This commitment involves an additional annual investment of $2 billion, with half of this sum allocated to research and development. The remaining half will be channeled towards partner professional services and solutions offered by VMware. This expanded investment in the partner ecosystem aims to support their growth in the realm of VMware-related ventures.
Today marked the commencement of VMware Explore 2023, ensuring a wealth of upcoming events and activities. While there's much more to come, here are a few notable highlights from the day:
The keynote address by SpringOne: Accelerating Innovation with Spring
SpringOne engaged in an exciting celebration marking the two-decade journey of Spring's existence. Spring, a steadfast companion throughout this odyssey, has stood unwavering. In the fast-paced world of Information Technology, learning from industry veterans is crucial. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Sean Massey, a seasoned professional in IT with a diverse career. Sean has played a significant role in shaping End-User Computing, particularly focusing on VMware Horizon, and has made valuable contributions to the VMware community.
Beyond being an IT professional, Sean is a dedicated learner, community advocate, mentor, and inspiration to many in the tech world. In our interview, he shared insights into his personal and professional journey, his role at VMware, motivations behind his presentations at VMware Explore, his unique approach to work-life balance, and more.
This blog post aims to share Sean's rewarding journey, providing valuable insights for IT professionals and enthusiasts alike. Whether you're an aspiring IT professional, an industry veteran, or simply curious about the IT realm, you'll find something worth exploring in this conversation.
About Sean Massey
Sean Massey, an IT veteran boasting a dynamic career spanning 16 years, now holds a pivotal role at VMware, at the intersection of multi-cloud and End-User Computing (EUC). Yet, Sean's path hasn't always been laser-focused. With a professional history that includes a diverse mix of experiences, from handling the IT department of a cookie factory to implementing a Horizon environment for a Catholic Diocese, Sean's career tapestry is as varied as it is profound.
Journey to VMware: The Power of Community
Sean's journey to his current role at VMware is a compelling narrative of dedication, hard work, and continuous learning, deeply intertwined with the vibrant VMware community. As a young IT professional, Sean found himself longing for more than what his Sysadmin role could offer. His aspirations extended beyond the daily operations of a singular environment; he craved complexity, challenge, and the thrill of incessant learning. This yearning to break free from conventional confines led him towards a decision that would become a turning point in his professional journey - the pursuit of the prestigious VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) certification.
Allow me to take a moment and clarify what the VCDX certification entails.
What is VCDX
The VMware Certified Design Expert, or VCDX, is VMware's highest certification. It's for IT professionals who excel at designing, building, and managing extensive VMware systems. It requires mastery in areas like troubleshooting, performance optimization, and managing systems. To get this certification, candidates must create and defend their design for a large enterprise VMware solution to a panel of experts. This makes it a very challenging certification to achieve.
For Sean, this was more than a certification - it was a quest that challenged his technical prowess and conceptual understanding, pushing him to go beyond the limits of what he thought was possible.
During his journey towards this esteemed credential, he dove deep into the VMware community, leveraging the collective wisdom and shared experiences to hone his skills and understanding. Attending events like VMUG and VMworld, he had the opportunity to connect with industry stalwarts and likeminded peers, establishing friendships and networks that would prove invaluable throughout his career.
It was the rich community and the exposure gained from blogging, his involvement with the VMware User Group (VMUG), and his transformative VMworld experience in 2013 that accelerated his career trajectory.
This period of intensive learning and interaction culminated in Sean achieving his VCDX certification while working at AHEAD. However, this was not a final destination but a new beginning. The certification opened doors to new opportunities and professional experiences.
The fusion of his technical expertise, underpinned by the VCDX certification, and his deep-rooted community involvement eventually led Sean to his current role at VMware. Here, he continues his journey at the intersection of multi-cloud and End-User Computing (EUC), constantly evolving and sharing his knowledge with the community that played an integral part in his journey.
Disruptive innovation, a term popularized by Clayton Christensen, continues to shape industries in today's rapidly evolving world. One company that stands at the forefront of this transformative movement is VMware, with its groundbreaking multi-cloud journey. The journey has been powered by products like VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC on AWS), which is emerging as a major disruptor in the industry today.
In the past, disruptive innovation has brought about significant changes in various industries. For example, consider the impact of Uber on the traditional taxi service in San Francisco. By introducing a new application-based approach to ride-hailing, Uber gradually moved upmarket, displacing established taxi services like Yellow Cab. Similarly, Netflix revolutionized the movie rental industry by disrupting Blockbuster with its digital streaming and rental-by-mail services.
Fast forward to the technology industry, and we find VMware leading the charge with disruptive innovations like vSphere and SDDC. These solutions changed the landscape of computing forever by virtualizing essential resources like CPUs and memory. As vSphere gained traction, it became the most popular infrastructure management API in use today, disrupting the traditional data center approach.
However, VMware did not stop there. Recognizing the challenges faced by organizations in managing multiple cloud environments independently, VMware embraced the multi-cloud approach. The introduction of VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC on AWS) was a pivotal moment in this journey. It brought together the power of VMware's virtualization expertise with the flexibility and scalability of AWS's cloud infrastructure.
