How Atlassian’s 2025 AI Collaboration Report validates the “5 Pillars” every organization needs to get right.
Picture
Over the past two years, artificial intelligence has embedded itself into nearly every corner of the enterprise. From code generation and marketing automation to customer engagement and reporting, AI has become a workplace staple. But despite the hype, most organizations still aren’t seeing the transformational outcomes they were promised.

According to the Atlassian AI Collaboration Report 2025, daily AI usage has doubled in the last year, and employees report being 33% more productive. But here’s the catch:
Only 4% of organizations are seeing meaningful improvements in company-wide efficiency, innovation, or work quality.
AI is making individuals faster, but it’s not making teams better. This productivity–collaboration gap is one of the main reasons so many AI projects stall after the pilot stage.

I wrote previously on Why AI Projects Fail: The 5 Pillars That Crumble Without the Right Foundation. Atlassian’s findings reinforce exactly that point: when one or more of those foundational pillars is weak, AI remains a tool, not a transformation.

Let’s break this down.

Choosing the Right NVIDIA-Powered Enterprise AI Platform: Dell and HPE

9/20/2025

AI Collab Score: 9 / 2
Picture
Enterprise AI is accelerating, and at the center of nearly every platform is NVIDIA’s ecosystem. Its dominance comes from a full-stack approach: purpose-built GPUs, optimized software libraries like CUDA and cuDNN, and a broad set of frameworks and developer tools. This combination has made NVIDIA the standard foundation for enterprise-scale AI infrastructure.

Building on that foundation, Dell and HPE have partnered with NVIDIA to deliver validated, production-ready solutions. These platforms are not direct competitors in the traditional sense but rather different approaches to operationalizing AI at scale. The key question for enterprises is not which vendor is better, but which integration model, governance framework, and consumption strategy best aligns with their workloads and long-term goals.

2026 Update: The Platforms Are Converging

Since this comparison was first published, both vendors have expanded beyond their original positioning. Dell has added more automation, validated workload blueprints, agentic AI software, rack-level integration, and a broader AI data platform. HPE has expanded Private Cloud AI with Blackwell GPUs, air-gapped deployment, larger GPU domains, agent governance, and new data services.

As a result, Dell is more turnkey than it was originally perceived to be, while HPE provides more scalability and architectural flexibility than the original fixed-configuration description suggested. The primary distinction is increasingly the operating model: how much infrastructure and platform control the customer wants to retain versus how much standardization and lifecycle integration the customer wants the vendor to provide.

Introduction: The Shift Toward On-Premises AI

Financial services leaders are making a decisive shift: moving AI workloads from the cloud to on-premises AI factories. Why? Because in banking, trading, and insurance, milliseconds can mean millions, data must stay compliant, and customer trust is non-negotiable.

NVIDIA’s State of AI in Financial Services 2025 report found that 98% of executives will increase AI infrastructure spending this year — building on-premises AI platforms designed for performance, security, and compliance. Deloitte highlights the need for explainable and trustworthy AI, while MIT Sloan notes that institutions are adopting AI deliberately — augmenting human work, not replacing it.

Why On-Premises AI is Gaining Ground

  • Latency = Money
In algorithmic trading, a 1-millisecond delay can cost $4 million in lost trading opportunities annually, according to industry research. On-premises AI keeps computation close to the data, reducing this risk.
  • Data Sovereignty
Regulations like GDPR and CCPA require financial data to remain within strict geographic boundaries. On-premises AI ensures sensitive data never leaves the institution’s control.
  • Security & Zero Trust
Isolating AI systems from the public internet enables hardened zero-trust architectures, minimizing exposure to cyberattacks.
Analogy: Moving AI on-premises is like a chef building a custom kitchen. A shared cloud kitchen works fine for everyday cooking, but when precision, timing, and control are mission-critical, chefs build their own kitchens with specialized tools. Financial institutions need that same level of control.

AI Collab Score: 10 / 2

Most enterprises think success in AI comes down to chasing the biggest models or pouring money into GPUs. But that’s the mistake that kills AI strategies: focusing on size instead of efficiency, resiliency, and data. The truth is, without the right infrastructure and approach, even the most advanced model won’t deliver meaningful results.

LLMs: The New Operating System of Business

Large Language Models (LLMs)—the brains behind tools like ChatGPT—are quickly becoming the “operating system” for modern applications. They can generate, interpret, and act on unstructured data at scale. That said, they also bring new headaches: unpredictable workloads, latency concerns, and what many now call token anxiety—the fear of spiraling inference costs.

Why AI Projects Fail: The 5 Pillars That Crumble Without the Right Foundation

The ambitious AI chatbot project was supposed to revolutionize customer support. Instead, it’s months behind schedule, burning through budget on unexpected cloud bills, and the team is at a standstill.

We don’t like to talk about it, but this scenario is far more common than the AI success stories we read about. Not because the models are bad. Not because the tech doesn’t exist. They fail because the foundation isn’t strong enough to support them.
As Gene Kim warned in The Phoenix Project:
“Left unchecked, technical debt will ensure that the only work that gets done is unplanned work.”
AI is no exception. When the five pillars of AI success aren’t reinforced, Strategy, Toolset, Infrastructure, Workforce, and Solutions, debt builds up in the form of rework, unplanned fixes, and stalled projects. What started as an ambitious initiative becomes a drag on the business.

Artificial intelligence is transforming industries, but here’s the truth: your AI is only as strong as the infrastructure it runs on.

Designing for AI is nothing like building a traditional three-tier enterprise stack. The workloads are different, the way data flows is different, and the performance requirements are far greater. If you approach AI with legacy design thinking, you’ll hit bottlenecks in compute, storage, networking, and governance, slowing innovation and limiting results.

The key is to start simple, validate your foundation, and scale deliberately. Let’s break down why, using something we all recognize: the human hand.

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 isn’t just a product update; it’s a defining leap forward.
What started as a bundled stack is now a full-spectrum private cloud platform, built for traditional workloads, modern apps, and enterprise AI. With cost-saving innovations, native automation, and built-in AI support, VCF 9.0 sets a new bar for private cloud agility and scale.

This is the most significant release in VCF’s history, and here’s why.

From Products to Platform: Why It Matters

For years, VMware customers juggled multiple management planes across vSphere, vSAN, NSX, Aria, and Kubernetes tooling. VCF 9.0 eliminates that sprawl by bringing everything into two unified consoles:
  • VCF Operations Console: Lifecycle, identity, configuration, logging, fleet visibility
  • VCF Automation Console: Self-service provisioning, IaC, cost control, Kubernetes services
Picture
Benefit: You save time, reduce human error, and boost team efficiency by managing everything—from deployment to decommission—through a single, cohesive interface.

What’s New in VCF 9.0—and Why It Matters

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 introduces powerful new features that enhance infrastructure performance, security, and operational efficiency. Here's a breakdown of what’s new and the real-world impact:

Feature What It Does Benefit Tech Takeaway
VCF Installer Guided tool to deploy VCF or convert existing vSphere+NSX+vSAN environments. Accelerates time-to-value, removes spreadsheet-driven deployments, and reduces setup complexity. Eliminates Cloud Builder. Supports air-gapped installs. Produces reusable JSON blueprints for automation.
vSAN ESA with Global Deduplication Real-time, space-efficient deduplication across the entire cluster. Reduces storage footprint by up to 34%, lowers SSD cost per TB, and extends hardware lifespan. Performs block-level dedup before write. Requires fewer high-endurance drives while improving write efficiency.
NVMe Memory Tiering Offloads cold memory pages from DRAM to NVMe. Lowers memory and server TCO by up to 38%, while supporting high-density workloads. Allows mixed DRAM/NVMe configurations (e.g., 50/50) without impacting app performance. Great for VM sprawl.
Enhanced NSX Data Path Reduces latency by bypassing virtual switches for east-west traffic. Boosts network throughput up to 3x—critical for high-performance workloads and east-west-heavy environments. Uses hardware acceleration (DPDK) to deliver faster switching and lower CPU usage.
Confidential Computing Encrypts VM memory at runtime, even from hypervisor and host admins. Enables high-trust workloads like healthcare and financial apps to run securely on shared infra. Uses AMD SEV or Intel TDX (hardware support required) to create encrypted enclaves per VM.
vMotion for AI Live migration of GPU-backed VMs with sub-2s interruption. Prevents AI/ML job disruption during host maintenance or rebalancing. GPU-aware vMotion now includes memory state and device passthrough context with near-zero downtime.

Architecting Agentic AI Workflows with Spring AI and Tanzu: From Chat to Action

6/16/2025

AI Collab Score: 9 / 2
Picture

Introduction: Beyond the Prompt

The era of single-turn prompts is over. Enterprise AI teams are now building agentic applications—software that can reason, remember, and act over multiple steps using tools, memory, and context.

But while public cloud tools like LangChain and open-source agent runtimes are popular for prototyping, they rarely meet enterprise standards for security, observability, and operational control.

Enter VMware Tanzu Platform and the Spring AI project. Spring AI is a production-ready AI framework — recognized by Microsoft in May 2025 as the most popular AI framework for Java developers. It enables agentic workflows to run anywhere Spring Java runs: from mainframes to VMs to containers to VMware Cloud Foundation. Tanzu Platform provides the secure, scalable Kubernetes foundation that makes these applications enterprise-ready.

What Makes an App "Agentic"?

Agentic apps move beyond simple LLM queries. They:
  • Chat: Accept natural language input
  • Reason: Use tools, memory, and context to make decisions
  • Act: Perform real-world functions (API calls, database writes, message sends)
  • Adapt: Maintain state, loop over steps, and retry if needed

Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open and consistent API that standardizes how AI agents manage and retrieve context across vector databases, LLMs, memory systems, and business APIs. Broadcom’s VMware Tanzu Spring team began collaborating on MCP in December 2024, and by February 2025, Anthropic officially selected Spring as the reference Java SDK. Together with the Spring AI SDK, MCP allows developers to orchestrate multi-step agentic workflows using familiar Java patterns—delivered securely and observably via Tanzu Platform.

The Great Cloud Reset: Why Cloud-Smart is the Future of IT Strategy

6/12/2025

AI Collab Score: 9 / 2

The cloud revolution promised agility, scalability, and cost savings. For many organizations, adopting a "cloud-first" strategy seemed like the clear path forward. But in 2025, we are witnessing a dramatic shift. CIOs and enterprise architects across industries are embracing a new approach: the "cloud-smart" strategy. Based on real-world lessons, emerging industry surveys, and the evolving demands of AI, security, and cost control, the cloud-smart philosophy is reshaping how we think about digital infrastructure.
From Cloud-First to Cloud-Smart: What CIOs Are Learning from Real-World Deployments

From Cloud-First to Cloud-Smart

A cloud-first strategy emphasizes default deployment of new workloads to public cloud environments. It favors speed and scale, but often lacks nuanced workload placement, governance, and long-term cost analysis. The result? Cloud sprawl, ballooning costs, compliance headaches, latency challenges, and vendor lock-in.

In contrast, a cloud-smart approach takes a more deliberate path. It asks: "What is the right environment for this workload?" Whether it's public cloud, private cloud, hybrid, or edge, cloud-smart thinking evaluates placement based on security, performance, budget, compliance, and data sovereignty.

This approach doesn't reject public cloud—it incorporates it as one option in a diversified portfolio that aligns better with business priorities.
